MWC Toasts to 10 Years

March 8, 2024, was a memorable day for Manitoba Women in Construction (MWC). Not only did the group receive media coverage on CTV Morning Live for International Women’s Day, but MWC also celebrated their 10-year anniversary with their largest event to date.

More than 200 MWC members, sponsors and guests gathered at Saddlery on Market to toast to a decade of building the long-term success of women in the Manitoba construction industry.

In addition to the hip, laidback vibe the Exchange District is known for, the evening soiree featured drinks and appetizers, a buffet station, lots of mixing and mingling and live entertainment by multi-instrumentalist Grant Leutschaft.

Following opening remarks from MWC’s Vice Chair Alyssa Malenchak, guests were inspired with speeches from Raquel Dancho, Member of Parliament for Kildonan – St. Paul, and Kayla Gervais, MWC Chair.

“I am SO proud to be here with all of you on such a momentous day, celebrating this milestone, and to see such diversity in our crowd,” Gervais enthused. “Themes being promoted for International Women’s Day around the globe this year include Invest in Women, and Inspire Inclusion, among many others. These calls to action by organizations such as the Government of Canada and the United Nations serve to remind us that despite progress, women face significant obstacles in achieving equal participation in the economy, and that gender equality is one of the most effective ways to build healthier, more prosperous, and more inclusive communities.”

MWC has been paving a way for women in Manitoba construction since 2014, providing a voice and community for women in the industry and a place for support, education and mentorship.

“Over the last 10 years, MWC has grown to holding professional development events with 150+ people – which is especially significant when you factor in that women make up only 12% of the construction workforce; 4% if you look only at tradeswomen,” Gervais went on to say.

And while the statistics might not show the full impact MWC is making, MWC’s chair says that women are being heard and are seeing support like never before from all corners of the industry.

“While the burden of changing the industry has previously remained solely with women, MWC is seeing an increase in male allies and company CEOs speaking out and asking what they can do to help.”

To cap off the evening, Gervais invited attendees to raise their glasses to not only MWC and 10 incredible years, but to the women who continue to break barriers.

“WOMEN. I’ll repeat that. WOMEN!” she emphasized. “Take tonight to truly celebrate all that you’ve achieved in this industry. From helping to put roofs over heads to [earning] the cheques that put food on the table.”
